Ndebele women's beadwork is so intricate that most of it can only be removed by being
destroyed. The heavy rings around the neck and feet remain for life and their
dress is an indication of age and status. The mature, married status of
these four women is indicated by the fact that their breasts are covered and the
fact that they have copper or brass bands on their legs. A young married girl
has grass bands which are replaced by metal when her husband builds her a house.
